Intensive Reading(Comprehensive English)course has been playing a key role in English curriculum of China’s higher education. However, limitations are found in its classroom practice. For example,in some Intensive Reading classrooms, students'lack of enthusiasm for classroom activities hampers the realization of curriculum goals.Starting from the point of classroom language use,an online survey is conducted on 392 English majors learning the course of Comprehensive English from various universities in China. The study aims to explore students’attitudes towards different language use strategies in Intensive Reading classrooms. From the perspective of translanguaging,a theory rapidly developing in the areas of international language education and applied linguistics, this paper encourages a flexible classroom language use strategy which allows students to actively take part in classroom activities,in contrast to the widely-applauded English-immersion notion.By adopting the principles of translanguaging, the study seeks to provide suggestions for effective classroom language use strategies in Intensive Reading courses. The ultimate goal is to enhance students’engagement in the classroom and promote the development of their comprehensive abilities in various areas such as science, social culture, communication and cooperation, and critical thinking.
