摘　　要：Upon the arrival of the Spring Festival in ancient China,people would always prepare taofu,pieces of peach-wood upon which incantations to drive out evil spirits were drawn or auspicious words were wrtten.The wooden charms were then hung on gateposts as a token of ushering in the new year.It is said these"peach-wood charms"were the predecessor of the ying lianantithetical couplets,a gem of traditional Chinese culture.
