摘 要:大学校长的毕业致辞通常被称为毕业生的“最后一课”,标志着学生们大学生涯的结束和新生活的开始,具有里程碑式意义。衔接手段作为影响演讲质量的重要因素之一,应被给予足够的关注。基于此,该文从韩礼德和哈桑的衔接理论出发,选取美国10所知名大学校长做的毕业演讲语篇为语料,分析其中的衔接手段,发现其使用特点和分布规律,探索在毕业典礼的特定语境下校长在致辞中如何利用衔接手段实现语篇功能。研究发现,五种衔接手段的使用在毕业演讲语篇中呈现出一定的模式:使用的频率从高到低依次应为词汇衔接、指称、连词、省略和替换。衔接手段的使用对提升演讲效果起着不同的作用。The commencement address is usually called the"last lesson"of graduates,and as a milestone,also marks the end of their college and the beginning of a new life.Cohesive devices,as one of the crucial factors affecting the quality of speech,should be given enough attention.Therefore,framed within the cohesion theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan,this paper selected the commencement address of ten famous universities in the United States as the corpus.By analyzing the cohesive devices in the speeches,the author tried to find out their characteristics and distribution in hope of exploring how presidents use cohesive devices to achieve textual functions in their speeches in the specific context of graduation ceremonies.Research has found that the use of five cohesive devices in graduation speech shows a certain pattern:the frequency of use from high to low appears to be lexical cohesion,reference,conjunctions,ellipsis and substitution.Also,the use of cohesive devices plays different roles in approaching speaker's purposes.
