To study the laxative function of mulberry leaf powder, mice in constipation model were fed with low, medium and high doses of mulberry leaf powder(5%,10%and 15%mulberry leaf powder were added in the diet, respectively). The feed intake of mice, body weight gain, the number and water content of feces, acetylcholine(Ach),motilin(MTL)and nitric oxide(NO)levels of serum were measured. The results showed that the number and water content of feces in 3 dose treatment groups were significantly higher than those in the constipation model group(P<0.05),and the fecal number of the 3 dose groups all reached or exceeded the levels of normal control group.Low and medium dose treatment could significantly increase the content of Ach and MTL in serum compared with the constipation model group(P<0.05),reaching the level of normal control group, and reduce the content of NO at same time(P<0.05).In addition, feeding mulberry leaf powder didn’t affect the feed intake of mice, but affected their body weight. This study can provide a reference for the development and utilization of mulberry leaf as laxative products.
