At the beginning of the 18"century,common readers in Britain had formed, but the main body was the middle class. The plebeians were on the fringes of the common readers, due to low literacy rates, books were not readily available, and books were expensive. After the 1760s,due to Wesleyan and other religious organizations'emphasis on reading, especially the promotion of social changes such as the Industrial Revolution and radical movements, the plebeian readers gradually increased.By the early 19"century,in the benign interaction that reading promoted self-awareness and vice verca, the plebeian public readers gradually formed.Public readers are the first element of constructing the public sphere of literature. The formation of the public readers lays the foundation for the emergence of the plebeian literature.
