Long dominated by white middle⁃class elite women,American women's studies presents a single narrative that marginalizes minority women. However, after sorting out the published literature on the history of A⁃merican women's studies over the past two decades, this article finds the significant contribution made by colored women and other female minority groups to the discipline. In particular, black women have employed black femi⁃nism which explored the intersectional influence of gender and race to enrich the disciplinary connotation.American women's studies reconstructed its disciplinary framework through the change of terminology, the formation of inter⁃sectionality, and a transition from“sisterhood”to“sister's differences”.The developmental trajectory of American women's studies inspires Chinese women's studies to position its individual narratives within the context of globaliza⁃tion and regionalization, participate in the construction of Asian women's studies and establish its own discourse sys⁃tem.
