Iris Murdoch's The Bell has drawn a lot of critical attention to its use of repetitions, among them the recurrence of major events in the old bell legend, recorded in manuscripts kept in Imber Abbey and narrated in Chapter Three of the novel by the historian Paul Greenfield. However, little importance has been attached to the legend as a narrative itself and to the reciprocity between the legend and the novel. This essay argues that in The Bell Murdoch employs the innovative narrative form of"mise en abyme."The inter-reflection between the embedded legend and the embedding narrative sheds light upon the characters'moral psychology and explains the reason behind the breaking-up of Imber community. The use of mise en abyme shows Murdoch's effort to depict reality and is a vehicle for Murdoch to reflect upon the moral reconstruction in postwar Britain.
