It is held by many scholars and translators that translation direction exerts an influence on the degree of faithfulness,or to be specific,on the whole the degree of faithfulness of E-C translation is higher than that of C-E translation. This paper confirms this hypothetical argument by investigating the translation of 383 titles of English and Chinese novels, which finds that the degree of faithfulness of the titles of English novels translated into Chinese is much higher than that of the titles of Chinese novels translated into English, although more than 50%translations of both directions are faithful.Such a translation phenomenon occurs mainly due to the differences between the current Chinese and English receptive contexts, between the global cultural influence of China and English countries, and between the eco-system and discursive authority of Chinese and western editors in publishing industry.
