As a key component of fluent linguistic production,multi-word sequences referred to lexical bundles are considered an important distinguishing feature of discourse of different registers, genres, and disciplines.Adopting the corpus-driven approach, the study examines the convergent and divergent usage of 4-word lexical bundles in English research articles by L1-English and Chinese writers in the field of applied linguistics. The results show that Chinese scholars rely more on lexical bundles than L1-English scholars, and generally conform to the English academic writing practice that dominated by of-phrases.Structurally,the Chinese group is characterized by clausal constructions whereas the L1-English group is featured by phrasal constructions.Functionally,Chinese writers,in comparison to the L1-English writers, utilize more text-oriented bundles, especially the inferential, causative, comparison and contrast bundles. In contrast,L1-English writers employ more research-oriented bundles, particularly the description bundles. The study also finds some distinctive bundles in Chinese writers'academic texts, which may be attributed to the different orientations of Chinese and Western cultures, the different syntactic structures of the English-language and Chinese-language,and their divergent academic traditions. The findings provide the implications for second language acquisition of lexical bundles and English academic writing curriculum in China.
