摘　　要：徐寿不仅是近代中国著名的兵工制造专家、化学家、教育家,而且是著名的翻译家。他以江南制造局翻译馆为平台,与西人傅兰雅等合作译介了16部西学书籍及多篇科学论文。这些译著对处于“学问饥饿”的中国而言,无疑是及时雨,不仅为江南制造局等军工和民用企业的生产提供知识和技术支持,为通过西学知识达成科技转移创造了条件,也为这些企业和近代新式学堂提供质量上佳的培训教材。更重要的是,这些译著为中国社会提供了较为前沿和系统的科学知识,成为思想界、知识界的领袖以及普通民众获取西学的极其重要的媒介,起到了传播新知、开启民智的作用。Xu Shou was not only an expert noted for munitions manufacturing,chemist and educator,but a famous scientific translator.With the Translation Department of Kiangnan Arsenal as the platform,he collaborated with Western scholars such as John Fryer to translate and introduce 16 Western books on various disciplines and multiple scientific papers.These translations were a timely help as far as the Chinese populace thirsty for knowledge were concerned.They provided knowledge and technical support for the production of military and civilian enterprises such as the Kiangnan Arsenal so that the scientific transfer could be achieved.Moreover,these translations served as excellent training materials for these enterprises and modern schools of the time.Most importantly,these translations provided China's society with cutting-edge and systematic scientific knowledge,becoming crucial means for the leaders of thinkers and the intelligentsia,and the general public to access Western learning.They played a significant role in disseminating new knowledge and enlightening the public,acting as important mediators in spreading new ideas and fostering intellectual advancement.
