Interleukin(IL)-37 is a member of the IL-1 family, which can control excessive inflammation and immunity during the progression of inflammation, thus protecting or mitigating tissue damage.Macrophages are the key cellular components in the innate immune system.Under the action of local microenvironment, macrophages can be activated into pro-inflammatory M1 type and anti-inflammatory M2 type to participate in the inflammatory process. With the deepening of research in recent years, the role of IL-37 in combating excessive inflammation in a variety of inflammatory diseases by inhibiting M1 macrophage polarization or promoting M2 macrophage polarization has been mentioned more and more. This paper mainly reviewed the anti-inflammatory mechanism and macrophage polarization of IL-37,and focused on the role of IL-37 in various inflammatory diseases by regulating macrophage polarization, and its therapeutic value in inflammatory diseases.
