The study made research on the selection of the suitable biological index based on the seasonal limnological data of 13 shallow lakes along the mid-lower Yangtze River.Through analysis of correlation between biological index and environmental metrics, metric distribution and its ability to identify,we selected three sensitive metrics of Shannon-Wiener index,Margalef index,BI index for bio-assessment.Furthermore,the study employed metrics distribution to establish assessment criteria and made bio-assessment on the 13 lakes along the mid-lower Yangtze River. The study indicated the consistency of the three biological assessment of 13 shallow lakes along the mid-lower Yangtze River. The study also indicated the consistency of biological and chemical assessments. The trophic states of these lakes which were more than moderately polluted by biological assessment reached to the eutrophic level. These assessment indexes and criteria are suitable for use in the shallow lakes along the mid-lower Yangtze River.
