摘 要:本文简要回顾了我国外语教学研究人员引进专门用途英语(ESP)的背景及其在我国高校公共英语教学进行的实践。在此基础上,提出了传统ESP能否助力实现我国高校大学英语教育培养目标的问题。文章专门论述了传统ESP在知识内容教学、能力培养、素质提升方面的缺陷,进而提出了专门用途英语从专门用途英语教学走向通过专门用途英语进行教育的观点,希望对我国高校更好地开展大学英语教育提供参考。This paper briefly reviews the background of introducing ESP to English language teaching in Chinese tertiary institutions and the efforts made by Chinese researchers in foreign language teaching.On the basis of the review,a question is raised on whether conventional ESP can serve the educational objectives of foreign language teaching in Chinese higher education.The flaws of conventional ESP teaching are pointed out in terms of its teaching of subject-area knowledge,improvement of abilities,and development of competencies.It advocates that the conventional ESP teaching should go beyond the teaching of the English language for specific purposes and move onto education via ESP(EESP)to carry out a comprehensive education of students through ESP.The view may shed light on the development of ESP in China and the education through foreign language teaching in Chinese tertiary education.
