In the early 20th century, the Eugen Diederichs Press invited German missionary and sinologist Richard Wilhelm to edit Chinese Fairy Tales for the series Fairy Tales of the World Literature. At that time, there was still no literary category or concept of“fairy tale”in the Chinese context,so Wilhelm compiled a collection of Chinese Folk Fairy Tales mainly out of oral stories, myths, fables, supernatural fiction, ghost stories, and legends. The book Chinese Fairy Tales(Chinesische Volksmärchen),was published in Jena in 1914.Because it contained passages from Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio(Liao Zhai)and Journey to the West,it is mainly discussed at the level of translation and cultural communication in Chinese academic circles. This article tries to classify and analyze the fairy tales and commentaries of the book,as well as review the context in which Wilhelm compiled the book. Moreover, the article tries to reassess the value and meaning of this book in a more comprehensive framework.
