摘　　要：论文借助现代精神病学对躁郁情绪的研究成果,剖析亨利·詹姆斯代表作《一位女士的画像》中女主人公伊莎贝尔·阿切尔的情绪从轻躁狂到抑郁症状的转变。论文发现,虽然詹姆斯与精神病学家在躁郁情绪的成因与症状上有诸多近似认识,但是作为小说家的詹姆斯则提倡用斯多葛派哲学强调的理性与责任去化解躁郁情绪。论文认为,詹姆斯对躁郁情绪的文学书写与哲学治疗不仅具有精神病学理论的前瞻性,而且也表明文学与精神病学在处理躁郁情绪时可以互鉴互补。This paper gives a psychiatric analysis of the manic and depressive emotions of Isabel Archer,the heroine in James's masterpiece The Portrait of a Lady,and argues that though James shared not a few suppositions with the modern psychiatrists as to the reasons and symptoms of the manic and depressive emotions,yet as a novelist,he preferred the Stoic rationality and responsibility for the therapy.Thus the literary handling of the morbid emotions and the philosophical therapy not only indicate James's farsightedness in the field of psychiatry,but also show that literature as well as literary criticism and psychiatry could learn from each other and complement each other.
