摘 要:威廉·燕卜荪在现代中英文学交流中发挥了重要作用。对燕卜荪中国经历的研究多关注他对西南联大诗人群的影响或者讲述他在西南联大的传奇经历,而较少涉及他课堂教学的具体内容。然则作为燕卜荪在中国从事的主要工作,课堂教学才是他真正进行文化交流的场所。本文借助哈佛大学馆藏的燕卜荪档案以及燕卜荪学生们的追忆,从多重角度重构了燕卜荪的课堂内容,尤其是他在北京大学时期的教学实践。通过重新审视燕卜荪的课堂教学,本文勾勒了他是如何在非英国语境中坚持自己的文学教育标准,并挖掘出这一实践背后体现出的推崇智性的批判思想。William Empson played an important role in the Sino-British literary exchanges in the 20th century.Researches on Empson's years in China mostly focused on his influence on the student poets at National Southwestern Associated University(NSAU)or his legendary career at NSAU,while his classroom teaching is rarely studied.However,as his primary duty in China,classroom teaching is the site where he truly engaged in cultural exchanges.With the help from the William Empson Papers held at Harvard University and the memoirs of Empson's students,this paper reconstructs Empson's classroom content,especially his teaching practices at Peking University,from multiple perspectives.By reexamining Empson's classroom teaching,this paper outlines how he insists on his own standards of literary education in a non-English context,and excavates his critical endorsement of intellectuality behind such classroom practices.
