Indirect translation plays an important role in image construction, which has not yet attracted much attention. From the perspective of imagology, this paper surveys the variation of female images in Arthur Waley’s English translation of Xi You Ji,and in the German translation translated via Waley’s English version, aiming to explore the reasons for the variation. The findings show that the mediating text has a crucial filtering role as regards the variation of female images in the German translation. The images of the“other”presented in indirect translations are not the result of direct observation. They are already filtered and manipulated by another“other”and therefore impacted by double“others”.Research of this kind has great practical significance in the current context of Chinese culture“going global”.
