The academic community has conducted a large number of studies on the causes and effects of weight loss culture on women, especially young women. However, limited attention has been paid to the influence of interpersonal interactions on excessive dieting behaviors and the severe pathological consequences that such behaviors may induce, potentially leading more young women to engage in unhealthy weight loss practices.Through in-depth interviews with 17 young women who engage in excessive dieting behaviors and non-participant observations of a Sina Weibo group consisting of 860 members, all of whom engaged in excessive dieting for weight loss, our findings indicate that prolonged excessive dieting for weight loss can increase the risk of developing eating disorders, which are psychological illnesses.Driven by the desire to pursue an idealized self-image within the context of Goffman’s“self-presentation”theory,these young women often exhibit abnormal patterns in their interpersonal interactions. On the one hand, despite their desire for understanding and care, they tend to conceal their abnormal eating behaviors during daily interactions with others who do not engage in excessive dieting. On the other hand, they prefer to engage in conversations with similar individuals within social networks, but the impact of virtual community interactions on their physical and mental health recovery remains limited.
