Narrative Writing: Using Signal Words

摘　　要：叙述性段落或文章就是讲述故事。讲好一个故事的两个关键要点是:(1)按正确的时间顺序讲述;(2)使用信号词或转折词。信号词能体现故事中各事件之间的关系,而且可以选择的信号词不胜枚举。然而,作者很容易出现重复使用相同词的情况。若能运用更多样化的转折词,叙述将变得更加准确而有趣。比较下面两个例子。注意:(A)如何使用常见的信号词,以及(B)如何使用从句来串联系列事件之间的关系。A narrative paragraph or essay tells a story.The two keys to telling a good story are(1)to tell it in the right order and(2)to use signal,or transition,words.These signal words show the relationship between the events in the story.There are many signal words to choose from.However,it is easy for a writer to become too comfortable with using the same transitional words again and again.By using a variety of transitions,a narrative will be more exact and interesting.Compare the two examples below.Notice how(A)uses the usual signal words while(B)uses clauses to show the relationship between the series of events.
