摘 要:当代中文语境中,“校园”一词主要用于指代学校所在的包含建筑与场地的整体物质环境。在一定层面上,这反映着国人认知观念中,对于我国学校教育类机构的物质形象在最一般意义上的把握:学校是一座“园”。从词源学视角对“校园”一词在中国近代时期的源丛发展进行缕析。考察该词在中国近代辞书和期刊出版物中的流布和含义变化。探究该词与英文“campus”词源的关联性。揭示该词从“校之园地”到“亦校亦园”的含义变迁脉络,以及中国传统园林文化与美国校园规划模式对这一变迁的推动作用。In contemporary China,the built environment of a university,a college or a school is used to be described in general as "Xiao Yuan(校园)"To some extent,that refects the notion that most of the Chinese might have:Institutes for education and research purposes should be built as a kind of"Yuan(园)"By digging the original meanings of"Xiao Yuan(校园)"in the dictionaries,encyclopedia,newspapers and periodicals published during The Late Qing and The Republic of China Period,and by tracing the etymology history of"campus"both in America and China at the time,the paper concludes that the decades of the 1930-40s had seen a shift in meaning of "Xiao Yuan(校园)"in China,from that of"Yuan'within the campus"to that of"Yuan-like'campus",analyzing the possible impacts that possibly exerted from the traditions both from ancient Chinese landscape architecture and American campus planning.
