摘 要:对于茅盾1921年8月携《小说月报》向自然主义转向这一事件,学界根据现有的茅盾书信和胡适日记等史料,认为胡适的“劝告”起到了决定性作用。这一结论失之武断,对这一事件的完整事实及其整体性文学史意义有所遮蔽。茅盾早期文学思想复杂多变,经他理论再造的自然主义与胡适的写实主义难以归同。始终着眼于中国文坛整体走向的茅盾在其早期文论中早已排定了倡导各种西方文学思潮的“序列”,自然主义转向更多的是茅盾对这一计划的适时推进和主动选择。此外,在胡适日记和茅盾书信中,还隐藏着寓于“劝”“听”之间的一场观念交锋。对这一事件的辨析,将显影西方理论介入“五四”文学论争的独特方式及其本土化再造的生成路径,由此带来对“五四”文学生成机制的深入理解和对相关文学史叙述方式的重要反思。Regarding Mao Dun’s shift towards naturalism with The Novel Monthly in August 1921,the academic community,based on existing historical materials such as Mao Dun’s letters and Hu Shi’s diary,believes that Hu Shi’s“advice”played a decisive role.This conclusion is arbitrary and obscures the complete facts of this event and its overall significance in literary history.Mao Dun’s early literary ideas were complex and varied,and the naturalism reconstructed by his literary theory was different from Hu Shi’s realism.Mao Dun,who always focused on the overall direction of the Chinese literary world,had already arranged a“sequence”of advocating various Western literary trends in his early literary theory,and the naturalistic turn was just Mao Dun’s timely promotion and proactive choice of this plan.In addition,there are hidden a literary debate between“persuasion”and“accepting”in Hu Shi’s diary and Mao Dun’s letters.The analysis of this event highlights the unique way in which Western theory intervenes in the May Fourth literary debate and the path of its localization and reconstruction,bringing about a deep understanding of the mechanism of May Fourth literature generation and an important reflection on the narrative methods of related literary history.
