Effect of Miller cycle on engine performance, combustion and emissions on operating points of full load, emission control area and lower fuel consumption area were investigated in a common rail heavy duty diesel engine. The Miller cycle was achieved by delaying the intake valve close timing from the base engine to 30°,50°and 70°CA,respectively.Research results show that the application of Miller cycle can achieve lower fuel consumption at a lower peak combustion pressure.Under the same peak combustion pressure, the late intake valve close(LIVC)timing can reduce fuel consumption by 1 g/(kW·h).Under the same fuel consumption, the exhaust temperature can increase by 20℃when larger LIVC timing is used, benefit to exhaust thermal management. However, larger LIVC timing can cause power loss at high speed and full load operation, therefore a high efficiency turbocharger has to be used to ensure the global power output, reduce the fuel consumption and increase the exhaust temperature.
