The animal style motif is a characteristic feature of the northern Steppe culture, and has been widely employed on various types of metal decorations.During the Warring States and Han periods, there were significant cases of metal plaques with decorations of animal motif emerged in the Central Plains;some of them were likely made by local craftsman. This article argues that the borrowing and imitation of northern animal style decoration by artisans in the Central Plains was not limited to the making of metal plaques. The author discuses five lacquerware and jade objects of the Han period, and highlights that the distinctive‘Hu’style decorations provide a strong line of evidence supporting the Central Plains manufacturing theory proposed above. These artifacts show not only the transition of the relationship between the Han and Xiongnu, but also the nobility’s obsession in exotic art style during the Han Dynasty.
