Paul Gauguin and Van Gogh created some Bible-themed artworks around 1890, one of which was Jacob Wrestling with the Angel. These symbolist paintings involved vision, which at that time was transforming from a religious context to a medical and psychological context. The most famous was Lourdes apparitions and the subsequent “miracles” of treatment, reflecting the cooperation and conflict between religion and medicine, and showing that vision as a psychological phenomenon cannot be dispelled by science and reason. The Christ-themed paintings created by Van Gogh during this period can be considered as records of his “fight”with his own vision, demonstrating the great psychological power of vision.
