American novelist John Williams'Stoner narrates and presents the protagonist William Stoner's quest for his own identity and self-worth in an chronological order, which abounds in sensory descriptions. From the perspective of the"sense of tingle"mentioned repeatedly in the novel, this paper attempts to explain Stoner's desire for pain and interpret the metaphorical meaning of pain.It is not only a physical perception, but also a kind of pain connecting literature to love, which manifests the protagonist's process of self-exploration.
