Since publication,no elements of Ethan Frome have received more critical controversy than its tragic theme and gloomy tone.Although they are thought to be related to Edith Wharton’s passion and moral contradictions at that time, there has been a lack of strategic, systematic and cognitive study on it in contemporary research.Reading the novelette via cognitive and personality systems approaches suggests that Wharton draws on the tragedy to narrate her own cognitive dissonance and redemption. She attempts to redeem the inconsistent self derived from her personality conflicts by projecting it onto conflicting characters, disharmonized narrative voices and a culture that overlooks emotional needs. However, she cannot counteract her guilt of crime and punishment because the emotional adjustments and cognition cannot stand up to the scrutiny of reason identified by social group. The interplay among her true needs of relationships, alienated social culture and the universal reason fails to reconcile Wharton’s cognitive dissonance and results in the gloomy ending of the story.
