物语蒙太奇:《传记作者的故事》生命书写之“诗与真”

摘　　要：在《传记作者的故事》中,物本身作为重要的线索贯穿于小说始末,借物言说的蒙太奇布局则搭建了该作显性的叙事结构。借助于蒙太奇特有的统辖各类物素的功能,拜厄特及其笔下人物将零散和孤立之物组装整合起来,构建出不同寻常的蒙太奇叙述力。当小说中的传记作者追觅的坚固牢靠之物遭遇到传统意义上被视为由透明事实材料构成的传记体裁时,物看似不可撼动的本质反而变得游移不定,面貌驳杂,非但未能提供关于传主生命书写的真实而确切的记录,反倒呈现出逝者与生者生命体验虚实交错的蒙太奇面貌,由此不仅揭示出“传记小说”一贯固有的“诗”性剖面,而且彰显出虚构于生命书写之“真”的重要意义。Things serve as a very important clue throughout A.S.Byatt's The Biographer's Tale,and a thing-montage helps build the explicit narrative structure of the work.By resorting to montage technique,Byatt and her characters assemble and integrate the scattered and isolated things to bring about an unusual narrative power of montage.When the solid and reliable things pursued by the biographer encounter the genre of biography traditionally thought to be composed of transparent factual materials,the seemingly unshakable essence of the things becomes unstable and complex.Instead of providing a true and accurate record of the life of the biographical subject,a thing-montage presents to readers the intertwined factual and fictional life experiences of the deceased and the living.Hence,the novel not only reveals the inherent"poetic"profile of"biographical fiction",but also highlights the great value of fiction to the"truth"in life writing.
