摘 要:New Confucian(ism)最早出现在20世纪初期入华基督教传教士创办的报刊上,用来泛指新的儒家(学),如清末民初的孔教派或宋明新儒家(学)等,其后在20世纪40年代成为指称现当代新儒家(学)的专有名词。当代学术界中作为专有名词的Neo-Confucian(ism)与New-Confucian(ism)分别指宋明新儒家(学)与现当代新儒家(学),在这种情况下一般不可混淆。除此之外,New Confucian(ism)(一般前面加上冠词a或the)还可用来泛指古今中外“新”的儒家(学),这种情况下的New Confucian(ism)可能指宋明新儒家(学)(Neo-Confucian(ism))。由此派生的Modern(Contemporary)Neo Confucian(ism)(首见于20世纪70年代)与Modern(Contemporary)New Confucian(ism)(首见于20世纪90年代)两者都是指现(当)代新儒家(学)。只是前者强调现当代新儒家(学)是宋明新儒家(学)的发展和延续,后者更强调两者的区别和断裂。The term New Confucian(ism)first appeared in the newspapers and periodicals founded by Christian missionaries who entered China in the early 20th century,which was used to refer to new Confucianism in general,such as Confucianism in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China or New Confucianism in the Song and Ming Dynasties.Later,it became a proper noun referring to modern and contemporary New Confucianism in the 1940s.Neo-Confucian(ism)and New Confucian(ism),as proper nouns in contemporary academic circles,respectively refer to the new Confucianism(learning)in the Song and Ming dynasties and the modern and contemporary New Confucianism(learning),which cannot be confused in this case.New Confucian(ism)can also be used to generally refer to the“new”Confucianism(generally adding the article a or the)at all times and in all countries.In this case,New Confucian(ism)may also refer to Neo-Confucian(ism)in the Song and Ming dynasties.The derived modern(contemporary)Neo-Confucian(ism)(first seen in the 1970s)and modern(contemporary)New Confucian(ism)(first seen in the 1990s)both refer to the contemporary New Confucianism.But the former emphasizes that the modern and contemporary New Confucianism is the development and continuation of the Song and Ming Neo-Confucianism,while the latter emphasizes the difference and fracture between the two.
