Developing the economy and improving people's welfare are crucial foundations for a modern state's legitimacy and an important source of national identity.Based on the Css 2021 survey data, the impact of income changes on Chinese people's national identity can be explored through two pathways:absolute income and relative income. The study revealed three key insights.First, there is a non-linear relationship between absolute income and national identity. That is,an increase in absolute income can enhance national identity to some extent, and this effect is more pronounced among low-income groups.Second, objective income disparity has a negative impact on national identity, but it positively moderates the relationship between absolute income and national identity. In other words,in regions with larger income disparities, the positive effect of absolute income on national identity is stronger.Third, the sense of subjective distributive fairness mediates the relationship between absolute income and national identity, with high-income groups having stronger national identity due to a greater sense of subjective distributive fairness. These findings provide some policy references for enhancing national identity.
