摘　　要：《小说与新伦理》是美国加州大学伯克利分校英文系教授黑尔的学术新著。此书聚焦于20世纪英美现代主义小说史,通过分析主要叙事模式在重要代表作中的呈现样式,阐述了英美现代主义小说中的“他性小说美学”。作者指出,受亨利·詹姆斯小说艺术影响,英美现代主义小说家倾向于用非个人化叙事策略展现他者生活;这种叙事模式使得读者与作品直接面对彼此,进而展开他性想象;同时,有限、模糊或缺失的叙事信息使得读者对阅读过程中的各种定见进行质疑与反思。作为对“他性小说美学”的理论补充,此书介绍了“新伦理”批评的主要观点,并以具体作品分析加以阐发。The Novel and the New Ethics is Dorothy J.Hale's major contribution to the ethical criticism.Focusing on the history of 20th-century modernist novels in Britain and America,the book elucidates the“novelistic aesthetics of alterity”by analyzing the presentation of major narrative modes in key representative works.The author argues that influenced by Henry James's artistic style,modernist novelists in Britain and America tend to employ impersonal narrative strategies to portray the lives of the Others.This narrative mode engages readers directly with the text,prompting them to embark on an alterity imagination.Simultaneously,the limited,ambiguous,or absent narrative information prompts readers to question and reflect on various assumptions during the reading process.As a theoretical supplement to the“novelistic aesthetics of alterity,”the book introduces the main points of“new ethics”criticism and elaborates on them through analyses of major representative works in the field.
