摘 要:19世纪末,英美文学界的一个大事件是沃尔特·贝桑特、亨利·詹姆斯和罗伯特·路易斯·史蒂文森等人对小说艺术的争论。尽管贝桑特的小说观一直被忽视,但作为该事件的导火索必然有其不寻常之处。贝桑特的艺术论背离了道德中心论,转向小说内部的规律,开创了小说批评的新方向,但也因其对艺术和规律等词的认识不够深入而产生一些漏洞。文章聚焦贝桑特小说批评中的艺术论,分析其根源和目的,反思其历史价值和局限性。A major event in the British and American literary circle at the end of 19th century was the debate about the art of ficiton among Walter Besant,Henry James,Robert Louis Stevenson,etc.Although Besant’s view of ficiton has been neglected,it must have something unusual or even outrageous as the trigger of the event.His concept of the art deviated from the morality-centered criticism,turned to the inner rules of the novel,thus started the new trend in the criticism of the fiction,but there were also some flaws due to the lack of in-depth analysis of the concepts like art and rules.This paper focuses on his concept of the art,probes into its roots and aims,reflects on his historical significance and limitations.
