Interest markers indexing academic authors’affective attitudes toward propositional content are important linguistic resources to achieve writer-reader interaction and communicate scientific knowledge in research articles.Drawing on a frame-semantic perspective, this study has investigated diachronic changes regarding the use of interest markers in applied linguistic research articles published in two time periods separated by 30 years(1989-1993 vs 2019-2023).The results revealed that academic authors were more likely to deploy interest markers for stance-taking,evaluate the interestingness of the current/previous research, and explain why the emotion of interest was elicited, than those from the earlier period were.In addition, they were prone to deploy boosted interest, intrude into the text and identify themselves as the experiencers of the expressed interest in the more recent period. These changing discursive practices reflect the competitive academia characterized by a publish or perish dictum and the dynamically evolved academic context featured by the specialized discipline, the expanding and heterogeneous readership in scholarly communication.
