摘　　要：英国汉学家霍克思是当代最为优秀的汉英翻译家之一,他所翻译的《红楼梦》是英语世界公认的世界文学经典名译。除了花费十余年时间翻译的《红楼梦》(前八十回),霍克思还留给世人两份极具研究价值的《红楼梦》翻译原始资料:《〈红楼梦〉英译笔记》和《红楼梦》翻译手稿。笔记和手稿不仅是译者翻译过程的记录,也是译者留给后人的可见翻译思考痕迹。本文根据霍克思的翻译工作笔记和翻译手稿等一手原始资料,从翻译生成学视角分析和阐释霍克思英译《红楼梦》中文化内容的翻译。通过对翻译“前文本”资料的考察,本文阐释了霍克思在翻译《红楼梦》文化内容时在翻译方法上的选择和取舍,揭示了译者解决文化翻译难点时的思考和决策过程。David Hawkes is considered one of the most outstanding contemporary Chinese-English translators,and his translation The Story of the Stone is internationally recognized as a masterpiece in the classical translation world literature.In addition to his translated novel,Hawkes also bequeathed us two highly valuable research materials:The Story of the Stone:A Translator's Notebooks and translation manuscript of the novel.Translation notebooks and manuscripts,which are the records of the translator's translation process,are visible traces of translation thoughts left by the translator.Based on Hawkes's translation notebooks and translation manuscript,this paper analyzes the cultural elements in Hawkes'English translation of The Story of the Stone from the perspective of Genetic Translation Studies.By examining the"avant-textes",this paper elucidates Hawkes'decision-making in translation methods when dealing with the cultural content in the Chinese novel.It attempts to reveal the thought process and translation decision-making when the translator encountered cultural challenges during his translation.
