The majority of the serialized fiction translation in the early twentieth-century Chinese newspapers and periodicals were lacking for a clear identification of authors or translators. One can hardly conclude that they were real translation only via the information given by those newspapers and periodicals. The periodical Chinese and Foreign Stories circulated in Hong Kong and Guangzhou published several"translated"fiction texts. However, these fictions manifested textual features deviating from normal translated texts in many aspects.Dudao An,published in this periodical from 1907 to 1908,seemingly a translated detective fiction, betrayed the features as follows:first,it lacked an existing original;second,it kept the form of classical Chinese fiction;third, its detecting mode contained no significant scientific elements, which was dissimilar to the conventional Western detective fiction then. These multiple evidence shows that Dudao An should be pseudo-translation.Meanwhile,the research reveals that the pseudo-translator interpolated into the fiction text foreign cultural references so as to meet the Chinese periodical readers'expectations of that time.
