摘　　要：流言场景贯穿乔治·艾略特《米德尔马契》始终,其艺术价值和社会功能不容小觑。本文从文学社会学角度,在场域的概念中阐释流言、资本和人物退场的关联性与社会学意义。分析表明,面对现代社会转型的种种矛盾,艾略特展现出精英小说家的保守姿态。她着重强调流言的规训方式和途径,揭示共同体在建构过程中不断进行内部整合和排除异己的本质特性。The artistic value and social function of Gossip writing,which is ubiquitous in George Eliot’s Middlemarch,cannot be underestimated.From the perspective of literary sociology,this paper explains the correlation among gossip,capital and characters’departure in the concept of field and their sociological significance.Gossip in the novel manipulates symbolic capital,internal operation order,and self-cognition of the characters in the field,leading to the departure of the characters.The functions of gossip(i.e.information exchange,ego enhancement,social integration and social segregation)are exerted to integrate social capital and maintain collective order in the town.The analysis results show that Eliot displays a conservative attitude as an elite novelist in the face of social contradictions arising from modern industrial changes.By analyzing the sociological functions of gossip in this work,this paper explains how a community disciplines individuals,revealing the essential characteristics of internal integration and exclusion of dissidents amidst community-building.
