Objective To explore the developmental regular pattern of thymus cortex and medulla volume in human fetus. Methods 79 normal human thymus taken in fetuses from 13th to 41th gestational weeks were studied quantitatively with stereologic method and analyzed statistically. Results During the period of development, the cortex volume density, the medulla volume density and the volume ratio of cortex to medulla were stable. The variations of each of the above parameters of thymus in different gestational months showed no significant differences.95% normal ranges(mm 0)of the cortex volume density, the medulla volume density and the volume ratio of cortex to medulla were 0.639±0.141,0.243±0.122 and 2.867±2.039 and their 95% confidence limits(mm 0)were 0.639±0.016,0.243±0.014 and 2.867±0.213, respectively. The cortex volume density was larger than that of medulla. The volume density of cortex was correlated with that of the medulla negatively. Conclusion In normal thymus development of human fetus ,volume of thymus and the volume of thymus cortex and thymus medulla are well in balance. The cortex volume density, the medulla volume density and the volume ratio of cortex to medulla might represent the normal state of human fetus thymus.
