Objective: It is to probe the significance of nitric oxide (NO) in leukemia and the relationship between NO and acute leukemia's traditional Chinese medical typing. Methods: Twenty healthy persons were chosen as normal control group. Thirty nine patients with acute leukemia were chosen as treatment group. The serum concentration of NO was measured in acute stage and remission stage, which included complete remission stage and partial remission stage. The changes of NO were studied and compared in different types of TCM. Results: The level of NO of treatment group was significantly higher in acute stage than that in remission stage and in normal group. And that in remission stage was lower than that in acute stage, but the difference did not reach the statistical significance. The order of NO level in different typing was both 'retention of toxic heat in the interior' and 'retention of phlegm blood', 'retention of damp heat in the interior', both 'deficiency of Qi and blood', and 'deficiency of both Qi and Yin'. Conclusion: The concentration of NO can contribute to estimate the state of acute leukemia and also be an objective guideline for classifying acute leukemia in traditional Chinese medicine.
