Dunhuang manuscript P.3438V contains four official documents written by Wang Ding,an official sent by the central government to Shazhou to declare the imperial edict containing the most recent government appointments. The contents of the documents are primarily concerned with his activities of attending banquets in Shazhou and taking part in a folk activity called dayong打颙,a kind of sacrificial ritual.Based on two reference texts, namely an inscription in a copy of the Avalokites vara Sutra(manuscript 116 in the collection of the Tokyo Calligraphy Museum),which records that Wang Ding spent some time transcribing Buddhist scriptures on March 6 in the 14th year of the Tianfu era(949 CE),as well as an envelope for another docu ment that belonged to Wang Ding(Dunhuang document BD09522V),research has concluded that manuscript P.3438V was writ ten in December of the first year of the Qianyou era(early 949 CE).This date is significant because the purpose his visit at the time was to deliver an official decree from the Later Han dynasty, stating that Cao Yuanzhong was to be appointed as deputy military commander, surveillance commissioner and jianjiao sikong检校司空,and was to receive the seal of the deputy military commander,as well as that of the surveillance commissioner of the Gui-yi-jun Regime.Interpreting this manuscript can help to clarify the history of the diplomatic relationship between Shazhou and the central Chinese government during the Later Jin and Later Han dynasties. The activities of Wang Ding in Dunhuang also reflect various aspects of the reception and special hospitality that imperial envoys received when visiting the Gui-yi-jun Regime under the Cao Family.
