摘 要:胡适与弗莱克斯纳分别是19世纪中国和美国著名的教育家。受到各自所处的时代背景、家庭环境和求学经历的影响,胡适与弗莱克斯纳对大学职能的认识既有相同点,也有侧重点的不同。相同点在于:在人才培养职能上,他们都重视对学生进行的培养,对学生有较高的要求;在科学研究职能上,他们都重视研究生院在学术研究中的作用。二者关于大学职能思想最大的分歧在社会服务职能上,胡适认为培养人才和科学研究的最终目的是服务社会,实现教育救国的目标。弗莱克斯纳则主张大学服务社会应以维护人才培养和科学研究职能为基础,大学应与社会保持适当的距离。Hu Shi is a famous educator in China and Abraham Flexner is famous as an educator in America,both of whom were born in the 19th century.Affected by historical background,family environment and education experience,their views on university function are similar,but their emphases are different.In the function of talent training,they both attach importance to the cultivation of students and have high requirements for students;in the function of scientific research,they emphasize the importance of graduate school in academic research.Their views on the function of social service are much different.Hu Shi considers that cultivating talents and conducting scientific research are aimed to complete the tasks of serving the society and saving the nation by education.Abraham Flexner takes the view that universities’service for the society should be on the basis of maintaining the talent training and scientific research functions,and that universities should keep an appropriate distance with the society.
