摘　　要：达蒙·加尔格特2021年布克奖获奖小说《承诺》围绕一个尚未兑现的承诺,以“死亡”为主题贯穿整部小说。小说中“死亡”既代表“毁灭”又暗含“新生”,其隐喻意义的演变与南非国家和人民从种族统治向民主化转型的经历暗合。小说分别从种族斗争的创伤、种族统治的衰败、转型期的混乱、公正和满怀希望的未来等四个维度展现“死亡”的深刻内涵,弘扬具有“命运共同体”内核的“乌班图”精神,构成一部当代南非民族寓言。加尔格特对转型期南非的死亡书写既有对种族隔离统治的批判,亦是对民主化转型后治理的反思,拓展了南非文学的书写边界,展现了转型期南非在创伤中前行的时代精神。Damon Galgut's novel The Promise,which won the Booker Prize in 2021,is a contemporary South African national allegory about an unfulfilled promise.In the novel,“death”represents both“destruction”and“rebirth”.The metaphorical evolution of its meaning parallels the history of the state and people of South Africa in the transition from racial supremacy to democracy.The meaning of“death”is explored from four dimensions:the traumas of racial conflict,the fall of white minority rule,the turmoil of transition,and a just and hopeful future,celebrating the spirit of“Ubuntu”with the core of a“community of shared future”.Galgut's death narratives of South Africa in transition is both a critique of apartheid rule and a reflection on post-democratic transition,pushing the boundaries of South African literature and reflecting the zeitgeist of transitional South Africa as it moves forward in the midst of trauma.
