Objective To evaluate the prevalence of oral diseases in soldiers stationed on an island, and the effect of long-term health education on the cultivation of oral health awareness and prevention of oral diseases,so as to provide scientific evidences and methods for the oral health management. Methods A random sample survey was conducted in May 2020 to assess the prevalence of oral diseases and oral health habits using a self-designed oral health questionnaire among soldiers from an island.Based on the findings, regular health education interventions were implemented. The effectiveness of the health education program was evaluated in March 2022.Results A total of 270 soldiers were randomly selected in May 2020,and 173 of them(64.1%)had at least one oral disease. The average oral health questionnaire score was 62.01±6.91 before oral health education. The objects with the rank of officer and undergraduate educational level or above could better understand the health knowledge than others(P<0.05).Following regular health education, the March 2022 survey showed that 132 soldiers(52.4%)had at least one oral disease, indicating a significant reduction in prevalence compared to 2020(P<0.05).The questionnaire score improved to 79.76±8.17,which was significantly higher than the 2020 baseline(P<0.05).Conclusion The prevalence of oral diseases among island-based military personnel remains high, with inadequate awareness of oral health knowledge.Regular oral health education can effectively enhance oral health literacy and reduce the incidence of oral diseases in this population.
