摘 要:With a global increase of aging populations,chondroitin sulfate(CS)is heavily demanded to treat the high incidence of osteoarthritis.CS is a type of polysaccharide derived from animal cartilage with outstanding anti-inflammatory properties.However,the limited supply of raw materials makes it difficult to meet the growing requirement.With the launch of the first animal-free CS,Mythocondro^(TM),which is biosynthesized through fermentation of an engineered E.coli strain combined with chemical sulfation in vitro,the interest in microbial biosynthesis of CS has greatly increased.This article highlights the recent advances in microbial biosynthesis of CS and its derivatives,analyzes the current challenges and provides possible proposals for future development.
