Richard Ford,a leading figure of Post-Southern American literature, explores the existential crises of protagonist Frank Bascombe within urban consumer spaces across the Bascombe Trilogy—The Sportswriter,Independence Day,and The Lay of the Land.By tracing Bascombe's cognitive shifts and value system transformations,Ford delves into interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships while also investigating ways to reconcile material pursuits with spiritual fulfillment. The trilogy advocates for individuals to adapt to changing value systems, recognizing the existence of alienation while embracing the semiotic logic of commodities, and seeks to re-establish emotional connections.By balancing material enjoyment with spiritual pursuit, individuals can transcend alienation and return to an authentic everyday life.Ford's narrative on consumption subverts the historical consciousness and moral imperatives of the Southern Renaissance, revealing how postmodern subjects perpetually negotiate a dialectical interplay between alienation and dealienation, thereby responding to the pressing concerns of contemporary society.
