大英博物馆藏“宁波钟”探析

摘　　要：鸦片战争期间,英军从浙江宁波天宁寺劫掠了一口大钟,将其作为战利品运回英国并奉献给维多利亚女王,这口钟被称为“宁波钟”,最初保存在白金汉宫。英国王室邀请大英博物馆东方学家塞缪尔·伯奇对“宁波钟”上的铭文进行翻译和研究,但译文错误百出,该钟后被维多利亚女王转赠给大英博物馆。大英博物馆藏“宁波钟”拉开了该馆有关中国专题收藏的序幕,具有里程碑式意义,该馆第一个冠名“中国”的展厅,即为陈列“宁波钟”而建。“宁波钟”流失海外,如果能回归故土,具有重要文化意义。During the Opium War,the British army looted a large bell from Tianning Temple in Ningbo Zhejiang,and transported it back to England as a trophy to be presented to Queen Victoria.This bell was called the“Ningpo Bell”and was originally kept at Buckingham Palace.The British royal family invited British Museum Orientalist Samuel Birch to translate and study the inscriptions on the“Ningpo Bell”.Unfortunately,the translation was full of errors.The bell was later donated by the Queen to the British Museum.The collection of“Ningpo Bell”in the British Museum marked the beginning of the museum’s subsequent thematic collections related to China holds a milestone significance.The first exhibition hall of the museum named“Chinese Room”was originally built to display“Ningpo Bell”.Cultural relics like the“Ningpo Bell”,which have been lost overseas,have significant cultural significance if they can be returned to their homeland.
