In their efforts to translate classical Chinese poetry and disseminate it in America, translators such as Pound,Snyder and Hinton have paid special attention to the vision of nature and the eco-wisdom with which the poems being translated are informed.Guided by their poetic intent and working through selection, translation, rewriting, and introduction of the source texts, these translators have constructed an ecopoetics within their own social contexts. The ecological meaning of classical Chinese poetry has been excavated and reinterpreted by three generations of American translators. The first generation is represented by Pound and Fenollosa, who explored the view of nature in classical Chinese poetry for the benefit of initiating an ecological approach to American poetic production in the early 20th century. The second generation of translators were active in the post-World War II years when, facing an eco-crisis,some beat poets contributed to the environmental movement with their translations of classical Chinese nature poetry.Representative of the works of the third generation is Hinton's"cultural translation"and ecopoetic interpretation of the mountains-and-rivers tradition of classical Chinese poetry in the current century. As a result of their continued and persistent efforts,an ecopoetic tradition in English translation of classical Chinese poetry has taken shape.Exploring this tradition helps to turn the topic area of eco-poetics and the"ecological turn"in sinology into a focal point in the study of sinologists'translation, study, and appropriation of classical Chinese poetry in general. It is also conducive to Chinese translation scholars'ongoing efforts to identify Chinese elements in 20th century American eco-poems and to re-define the cultural/literary relationship between China and America.
