Ulcerative proctitis falls within the scope of inflammatory bowel disease and is characterized by recurrent episodes and chronicity, which can significantly impact patients′physical and mental health as well as their quality of life. The concept of“latent toxin”refers to toxic pathogens that remain dormant within the body and become activated under certain conditions. This article posits a close relationship between the etiology and pathogenesis of ulcerative proctitis and the“latent toxin”theory.Accumulation of damp-heat toxins in the intestinal network leads to a struggle between pathogenic and righteous qi,resulting in toxin proliferation and acute flare-ups.Over time, this weakens the body′s defenses, allowing the toxins to persist, ultimately disrupting organ function, impairing the balance of qi and blood, and causing disharmony between yin and yang.Guided by the“latent toxin”theory, this article advocates for careful analysis of the disease mechanisms at different stages of its progression, emphasizing syndrome differentiation and individualized treatment. The article aims to provide new clinical insights into the traditional Chinese medicine treatment of ulcerative proctitis.
