摘  要:《西游记》在英语世界跨文化传播的历史,也是孙悟空形象历经从格义曲解到趋于归真的过程。《西游记》解读的开放性和英汉两种语言对语境依赖程度的差异性,客观上为孙悟空形象跨文化传播过程中的流变提供了可能,而将这种可能变为现实,则是译者的主体性差异,这种差异性体现了不同历史时期的国家、学术、社会主体在文学形象书写上的不同旨趣和追求,而《西游记》翻译史不断延续的动力,正是译者主体差异性和文学翻译批评所追求的“忠实”之间所形成的矛盾和张力。The history of the cross-cultural dissemination of Journey to the West in the English-speaking world corresponds the distorting-returning process during which the image of Sun Wukong undergoes a transformation from being wrongly interpreted through accommodation to approaching the original.The openness of the interpretation of Journey to the West and the disparity in the reliance on context between the English and Chinese languages objectively offer the potential for the alteration of Sun Wukong’s image in the process of cross-cultural dissemination.Nevertheless,it is the differences in the subjectivity of translators that turn this potential into reality.Such differences embody the distinct interests and pursuits of national,academic,and social entities in the representation of literary images in different historical periods.Moreover,the continuous driving force behind the history of the translation of Journey to the West precisely lies in the contradiction and tension formed between the varied subjectivity of translators and the pursuit of“fidelity”in literary translation criticism.
