After the reform and opening-up,Franz Kafka's novels spread widely in China, which not only had a profound impact on the creation of many contemporary Chinese writers, but also attracted the attention of the academic community. At this point, the Research of Kafka and his novels became increasingly diversified.Meanwhile,Kafka's works made their way onto the stage of Chinese contemporary theater:Li Jian-Jun's adaptation of"The Metamorphosis"replaces the protagonist with a courier from the grassroots of contemporary China, using images to display the media and present the landscape, and rewriting the novel's ending to reflect and satirize reality;"A Report to an Academy,"directed by Xi Wang and starring Li Teng-fei,uses an ape that has been taught to behave like a human to illustrate how the individual's body are constrained by power and rules in their quest for a way out. Both Gregory, who transforms into an insect, and the ape that evolves into a human, are representations of"human alienation"in modern society. The Chinese contemporary stage version of Kafka, adhering to Kafka's core spirit, concerns Chinese reality and deeply reveals the predicaments and struggles experienced by modern individuals within social systems, interpersonal relationships, and life uncertainties.
