China’s First Bilingual Maritime Technology Dictionary:A Critical Analysis

摘　　要：两次鸦片战争的失败使清政府认识到西方船炮技术的先进性。为此,清政府在福建兴办造船厂,并创办福建船政学堂引进法国造船技术。期间,学堂中法教习合作编撰了中国第一部双语船舶科技词典——《福建船政学堂法汉技术词典》。该词典虽因编纂仓促而在体例上存在不足,但其对中国近代造船业和海军建设的历史意义不容忽视。本文对该词典的编纂背景、特点及其历史价值进行系统评述。The defeats in the Opium Wars led the Qing government to recognize Western naval technological su-periority.Consequently,shipyards were established in Fujian alongside the Fujian Arsenal Academy to acquire French shipbuilding expertise.During this period,Chinese and French instructors collaborated to compile Chi-na’s first bilingual maritime technology dictionary—Dictionnaire technique franco-chinois comprenant les termes professionnels et scientifiques employésàl’arsenal de Fou-Tcheou(the French-Chinese Technical Dictionary of the Fujian Arsenal Academy).While the dictionary shows limitations in its format due to hasty compilation,its historical significance for China’s modern shipbuilding industry and naval development cannot be understated.This paper provides a systematic review of the dictionary’s compilation background,characteristics,and histori-cal value.
