Taking writing samples of different qualities under the same topic from the Cambridge BEC Business Letter Writing Test as the research object, the building and shaping of interpersonal relationships in high and low-quality writing were compared and analyzed based on the annotation and multidimensional classification of modality. It was found that,in terms of quantity and intensity, the modality of high-quality writing was full and compact, and attitudes and positions were consistently conveyed throughout the text, while low-quality writing was loose and disorganized, failing to assert positions and status effectively. In terms of quality and validity,high-quality writing made effective use of modality to establish professional and elastic interpersonal relationships through appropriate subjective and objective orientations, modal values, and metaphorical modalities, while low-quality writing demonstrated implicit and ineffective use of modality, with instances of modality misuse and misapplication leading to implicitly ambiguous stances and statements of disbelief and distortion, which impeded the effective conveyance of interpersonal meanings.Differences in the use of the modality system affect the creation and dissolution of interpersonal meaning, and the success and failure of interpersonal relationships.
